Following the privatisation of their jetty by a big corporation, the tiny fishing community of the Curonian Spit seeks temporary shelter in the handful of remaining warehouses where they moor their boats. The changes in Nida go beyond the shifting genius loci and the fostering of new social bonds among its residents, driven by commercial interests. Alongside declining fish stocks, there is a gradual fading of the town’s once-thriving fishing community. Year after year, despite worsening conditions, two veteran fishermen persevere with a trade that represents not only their main income, but also their last remaining passion. In time, they come to accept their diminishing fishing prospects, and cherish every moment spent at sea. The dock – now haunted by retired fishing folk – serves as a stark reminder of life’s impermanence.
