Mara is arguably the most diverse and important savanna ecosystem on the planet. What makes it special is not only that it forms the northern limit of the Serengeti, but also that it is where migrations from the south and northeast converge. "The Emergence" takes us into the Mara plains for nine months after the wildebeest herds have departed, revealing what happens here for most of the year. Young animals are born and grow, learning how to survive in a world where predators search for new prey in the absence of the wildebeest. Through giraffes, zebras, gazelles, antelopes, leopards, jackals and elephants, a vibrant world unfolds – one centred not on death, but on birth, growth and life. The film ends with the arrival of the northern zebra migration, as the plains once again fill with stripes and the rivers with the thunder of hooves.
