How much is a forest worth? And what is actually the most valuable thing about it?
Is biodiversity, timber production, wildlife habitat, jobs, recreation, or perhaps silence and well-being more important? In the "Forest Values Auction" workshop, you and your group will decide which forest values matter most to you.
Each group is given 100 points to allocate among various forest values. However, you cannot value everything equally; you must discuss, make choices, and find compromises. Just when you think a decision has been reached, an unexpected situation arises that might put your choices to the test. Would you change your decision if a rare species were discovered in the forest? Or if local jobs were at stake?
At the end of the workshop, we will compare the groups' choices and discuss why the same forest can hold vastly different values for different people.
Come and put your values to the test—because the worth of a forest cannot always be measured in money alone.
