13:30 Silvia Pärmann “Countries that don't exist”

Photographer and travel journalist Silvia Pärmann talks about the documentary project “Countries that don't exist” about everyday life in republics that are free countries only in name. During eight years she travelled to 12 places, including Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Chechnya that once shared the fate of Estonia, as well as more exotic Somaliland and Western Sahara, and North Cyprus for holidaymakers. As a result, a book titled “Countries That Don't Exist” was published and an exhibition of the same name displayed at the Dokfoto Centre.

16:30 Urmas Tartes “Sources of Creativity”. Radio Night University recording.

Sometimes we get the feeling that we are seeing something special. When you look at special things, you often lose track of time. We can look at such things indefinitely. Where does the recognition of special begin, the ability to be fascinated? Yet, at times, we sometimes see ordinary things as special. When a hall full of people are fascinated, are they fascinated in a similar way or is everyone fascinated in their own way? How does ordinary nature suddenly become special? Is nature the only source of creation?

Silvia Pärmann “Cool Landscapes”

In front of the Lihula Cultural Centre

Photographer and travel journalist Silvia Pärmann’s outdoor exhibition “Cool Landscapes” records everyday life in the northernmost city of the world, Norway’s Longyearbyen with about 2,000 inhabitants, and in the Russian mining town Barentsburg with 450 inhabitants. The photographs have been taken further north than Siberia, Alaska and most of Greenland – the Svalbard Archipelago, with moods created by fjords, snow, majestic mountains, polar bears and coal mines.

PeeterSirge Photo School “On the Tracks of Rail Baltic”

In the large hall of Lihula Manor

This photo exhibition was inspired by Rail Baltic (RB). Let us say immediately that this is not a protest against RB, but against its route and the way our small country is being wasted. There is a feeling that if we require more land, we can immediately ask for it from across the border as an infinite resource. Nature is our most precious treasure – without it this little country has no value!

The tracks of RB go through forests and bogs, fields and homes, although there are also good solutions and alternatives that are not really taken into account.

So the story of the two bogs was born.
Throughout the year, Rääma and Männiku bogs were visited several times. The future of the bogs is sad because the railway will be built through them. The probability that these bogs will be destroyed is very high.

The authors hope that this memory in the form of photos of these bogs touches every viewer’s soul.
29 nature and photo enthusiasts hiked in the bogs, 14 of whom decided to share their work at the exhibition.

Haapsalu photo club “Meadows”

In the small hall of Lihula Manor

Haapsalu Photo Club participates in Matsalu Nature Film Festival with a thematic exhibition for the sixth time.

At the exhibition, you can see photos of the flora and fauna of meadows, human activities and the functioning of nature.

Haapsalu Photo Club has been active since the 1970s. After a few decades of activity, there was a less active period until 2013 when the club was reactivated. This is confirmed by a long and diverse list of exhibitions, joint activities and trainings. A nice tradition is the club’s annual exhibition in Haapsalu Cultural Centre. What is shown at the MAFF is part of the annual exhibition taking place in October.

Marje Loide “Enchanted by butterflies”

In the Pillar Hall of Lihula Cultural Centre

The author is a biologist-botanist who takes people hiking in her spare time. She wants to show the mushrooms, insects, plants and beautiful landscapes typical of the season. “Memory images are not always enough, and therefore I sometimes want to bring someone with me in my camera,” she says.

Marje got her first camera in 1973 when she studied biology at the university. It was tiny, with a hand strap, and took 72 black and white shots on one film.

Marje took up macro photography three years ago, when she received a spare macro lens from a hobby photographer she knows. Currently she photographs at least once a week insects visiting flowers, while in winter her attention turns to ice flowers on the windows.

Marje wants to capture the biodiversity of her home region and the time in the morning sunlight when the insects are slightly clumsy from the dew and more accessible.

Kose Art School “Insects”

In the slaughterhouse gallery

Kose Art School’s student exhibition “Insects” was completed in the summer camp of 2019 in Neeme village, Harjumaa. The visual side is supported by texts about the vanishing of insects, which, unfortunately, is often caused by human activities. The authors want to make viewers think about the fragility of nature and the consequences of human activity. 18 students between the ages of 10 and 16 participate in the exhibition. At the exhibition, residual and refuse material of OÜ Digiprint are used.

Inga Tartes’ painting exhibition “Sources of Creativity”

In Lihula Library

There are places in nature that fascinate. Sometimes we can capture this magic as a photograph. Sometimes such photos are so powerful that they can inspire even if you were not present when the photograph was taken. This is how a photo can become a painting. A painting is a generalisation where the most important thing remains and from which nothing can be taken away.
